General Congregation Flash

(Feb-2008)

During the last two weeks of the Congregation, a number of people at the top level have been elected who will help Father General in the task of governing the Society. In addition, every day, two new provincials have been announced by Fr General. Quite a backlog had developed in the provinces since all appointments had been put on hold till after the General Congregation, which was announced in 2006.

Four topics are currently being discussed as possible decrees, documents that will guide the Society, whereas a number of other topics (called "ordinary governance issues") will be referred to Fr General and his assistants for implementation. The decrees may possibly deal with issues such as Apostolic Obedience; Governance; Mission and Identity; and Collaboration with Others. The ordinary governance issues include: Ecology and Globalization; Jesuit Brothers; Indigenous People; Communications and Internet; Community; Formation; Migrants and Refugees; and Youth.
