India - Jesuits Campaign for self-determination of indigenous people

(Dec-2014)

The Supreme Court of India cancelled 214 out of 218 coal blocks allotted to private companies over the past two decades, calling them "illegal". While the newly formed central government is preparing guidelines for re-auctioning those illegal mines, Bagaicha, the social coordination centre of Jesuits in central India, together with many Indigenous people, organizations, people's movements in Odisha, Jharkhand, Chattisgarh, are campaigning to stop the process of re-auctioning with a "demand that the Gram Sabha (village governance institution) be recognized as the legitimate, constitutional body to decide on all that pertains to mining" in their respective places that are being affected by these illegal mines. Kindly sign the petition to join the campaign.
