(19/10) Feast/Memorial/Season of:

Martyrs of North America

The Jesuits who crossed the ocean to minister to the indigenous people of New France ministered mainly to the Hurons who embraced Christianity but were always at risk from attacks by their enemies, the Iroquois, a much larger and more aggressive tribe. Both Hurons and Jesuits perished during these attacks. The eight Jesuits honored today displayed courage and steadfastness in the face of torture, and stayed with the people to whom they ministered despite the danger which that commitment entailed. These martyrs include the following men: Isaac Jogues, John de Brébeuf, René Goupil, John de La Lande, Anthony Daniel, Gabriel Lalemant, Charles Garnier, and Noel Chabanel.
