AUSTRALIA: Season of the Spirit resource to promote faith and justice

The Australian Jesuit Province has a new prayer resource that focuses on important faith and justice issues that the country will mark from late May to the end of June.  Developed by Jesuit Communications Australia, "Season of the Spirit" provides weekly prayers throughout this "season". Beginning with Pentecost, "Season of the Spirit" encourages people to reflect prayerfully on how God is calling us to be his people in the world today, and to consider how the coming of the Holy Spirit encourages us and invites us to consider our relationship with God, with each other and with creation. JESUITICA

Fr Wilhelm Eberschweiler, SJ (1837-1921), declared Venerable

On 21 May 2018, Pope Francis recognized the heroic virtues of the German Jesuit Wilhelm Eberschweiler, and declared him Venerable. Born in 1837 in Püttlingen (Saar, Germany), he entered the novitiate of the Society of Jesus in 1858, was ordained a priest in 1868 and pronounced his final vows in 1872. Three of his other brothers were also Jesuits. He was novice master and rector of the juniorate in Prussia, the Netherlands and England, where the Society went into exile when Jesuits were expelled from Germanic lands. In this way, he contributed for almost 50 years to the spiritual accompaniment and formation of hundreds of young lay people, religious, Jesuits and candidates for the priesthood, while at the same time being an extraordinary example for them. He was considered an "apostle of the joyful love of God", which he experienced in his daily life. Some of his preserved writings show his deep union with God. He died in Exaten (Holland) in 1921. In 1958, his remains were transferred to Trier (Germany), where they are located in the "Church of the Jesuits" in the present major seminary of the diocese. There is great devotion to him there.
