Apostolic Preferences as a Mission from the Holy Father

As the Society of Jesus continues to discern its apostolic preferences, Father General Arturo Sosa has observed that the process should be an occasion for the Society to live "sacramentally" the connection of the Society of Jesus to the Church through its availability to the Holy Father circa misiones. "The process of discernment in common seeks to deepen our availability for collaboration in the mission of the Church in the way that the Holy Father thinks best. Share the suffering of the victims of abuse and foster a culture of protection

In a letter released on 24 August 2018, Jesuit Superior General Father Arturo Sosa addressed all members of the Society of Jesus and lay collaborators of the Society's mission regarding the recent Pennsylvania Supreme Court grand jury report on sexual abuse in the Catholic Church. "Through the intercession of Our Lady of the Way, we ask the Lord for 'growing sorrow and shame' in the face of the suffering caused by so many abuses," Fr. Sosa wrote in his letter. "We ask the Lord to accompany us in a real process of personal and institutional conversion." Fr. Sosa emphasized the contrition and call to reform expressed in Pope Francis' "Letter to the People of God," in which the pope wrote that "We showed no care for the little ones; we abandoned them."

IRELAND: Help with healing process, Pope urges Jesuits

Pope Francis had a private meeting with over 60 Irish Jesuits, including the Irish Provincial Leonard Moloney at the Papal Nunciature in Dublin on 25 August 2018. Fr Moloney began by asking Pope Francis if there was anything the Irish Jesuits could help him with in line with their Fourth Vow - special obedience to the pontiff. The Pope responded by asking them directly to help to address clerical sexual abuse, with the healing process and with the reparative work that needs to be done. Read more...
