New Province On Holy Thursday (29 March), Father General Arturo Sosa signed a decree establishing the new Jesuit Province of Canada (CAN) which will come into existence on 31 July 2018. The new province will unite the current Jesuit provinces of English Canada (CDA) and French Canada (GLC).

JAPAN: Search for Jesuit partnering between Japan and Vietnam The Jesuit Social Centre Migrant Desk in Tokyo is discussing ways to collaborate with the Vietnam Jesuit Province, after seeing a sharp increase in the number of Vietnamese workers entering Japan under the guise of trainees. Within the last three years, the number of Vietnamese living and working in Japan has grown to more than 200,000. In January and February, Fr Ando Isamu SJ, Head of the Migrant Desk spent five weeks in Vietnam gathering concrete information about the fast growing phenomenon of young Vietnamese looking for jobs in Japan. USA: Police arrest Catholic Leaders Calling for Immigration Reform A Jesuit priest, Fr Thomas Reese, was among dozens of Catholic groups and faith leaders recently arrested in Washington DC, after calling on lawmakers to support immigration legislation that provides for permanent protections available to young immigrants who had been brought to the USA as minors by their parents. The Catholic leaders spoke about the moral imperative to pass legislation that provides dignity to undocumented immigrants. Read more...
APPOINTMENTS
Father General has appointed:
- Fr Donald Miranda (PAT) as provincial of Patna Province. Fr Miranda was born 1966, entered the Society in 1989 and was ordained in 1999. He is the Rector of the Jesuit community at Bettiah (Bihar), and Director of the Alumni Association of the two High Schools on the campus. He will take over as provincial from Fr Jose Vadassery.
Pope Francis has appointed:
- Mons Donatien Bafuidinsoni (ACE) as Bishop of Inongo, in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Mons Bafuidinsoni was born in 1962; entered the Society in 1981 and was ordained in 1993. Until his new appointment, he was Auxiliary Bishop in the Archdiocese of Kinshasa.
