    FROM THE PROVINCES

AUSTRALIA: Student leaders gain insight into Ignatian life

The community at Loyola Senior High School, Mt Druitt, NSW, welcomed various Jesuit and Ignatian companion schools from all around Australia to the 8th Annual Ignatian Student Leadership Conference. Aside from Xavier College, Kew (who were unable to attend due to a clash), all of the Jesuit and Ignatian companion schools of Australia sent two to four student leaders to participate in the conference. The conference was an opportunity for students to share their ideas, deepen their awareness of the Jesuits and their mission, and to ultimately form a better understanding on what it is like to be a Christian leader. During the conference there were countless opportunities for the student leaders to reflect on their deepest desires for their schools and for themselves.

INDIA: The Saint Xavier's University Bill Passed in the Assembly

The West Bengal Assembly recently passed the St. Xavier's University Kolkata Bill 2016, paving the way for a new university at New Town, Rajarhat, to meet the growing need for quality facilities in the state's Higher Education. The bill provides that the St. Xavier University may have several constituent colleges situated within Bengal that are established and administered by the Jesuits. St Xavier's College Kolkata Educational Trust is the sponsoring agency of the university. It will have the power to manage all higher education institutions run by the Jesuit Trust across the State. The trust will provide instruction, teaching, training and research in various disciplines and specialised fields of science, technology, law, management, social sciences, medicine, education, humanities, performing arts and several other areas. The Jesuit Provincial of the Calcutta Province of the Society of Jesus will be the Chancellor ex-officio as the President of the Trust. He will appoint the Vice-Chancellor from among the Jesuits in consultation with the Governing Board. The university will start operating from the 2017-2018 academic year.
