FROM THE CURIA
From 1 May 2016, the Jesuit Region of Romania has become part of the Assistancy of South Europe, which includes the Provinces of Spain, Italy, Malta and Portugal. This move does not involve any administrative changes in the Region, since the Assistancies in the Society are not juridical, but only a support system for the best apostolic service and the increased collaboration of the member Provinces.
JRS welcomes "Education Cannot Wait" fund
The Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) is gratified the international community made a commitment to education at the recent World Humanitarian Summit in Istanbul. The Education Cannot Wait fund follows on the heels of the JRS Global Education Initiative launched last December. "Education Cannot Wait is an important step forward in helping to ensure that the most vulnerable and disenfranchised have access to an education," said Jesuit Refugee Service International Director Fr Thomas H Smolich SJ in Istanbul. "JRS feels education is always part of any emergency situation."
FROM THE PROVINCES
AFRICA: JESAM - CEP Africa Experience
The president of JESAM, Father Michael Lewis, hosted six European Major Superiors from 22-28 May 2016. The visit was organized to "present a more integral and human vision" of the African continent (GC35, Decree 3, no.39). The superiors visited some Jesuit works in the Eastern Africa Province, Rwanda-Burundi Region, and Central African Province. In Nairobi, Kenya, the Superiors took part in the Sunday liturgies in Jesuit-run Saint Joseph the Worker Parish, Kangemi, visited the Spirituality Centre of Mwangaza, saw the needs of refugees in Kakuma Refugee Camp (JRS). From Kenya, the team flew to Kigali, Rwanda, where they visited the Christus retreat Centre and the new Saint Ignatius School in Kibagabaga. They travelled by road to Cyangugu (Novitiate), and crossed the border into the Democratic Republic of Congo, to be welcomed in the Amani Retreat Centre in Bukavu. From there, they went to the cathedral, prayed at the tomb of Bishop Christophe Munzihirwa S.J., and visited the Cheche Social Centre and the College Alfajiri (education). The six returned to Europe having experienced, albeit in a very limited way, another way of being Jesuit.
BELGIUM: General Assembly of the Major Superiors of Europe and the Middle East
Higher Education, Refugees and Migrants, Young Adults, were some of the themes discussed by the Major Superiors of Europe and the Middle East as they met in Belgium from 3rd May to 7th May. "We have been looking at the Higher Education situation for many years," said Conference President, John Dardis. "Our continent is in crisis in so many ways - in terms of its values and in terms of its future direction. We have many institutions of Higher education and they have the ability to reflect deeply on important issues. We are supporting a project called 'Higher Education for Social Transformation' which links our universities and faculties with our Social Centres, identifying the main issues of concern in our European societies."
BELGIUM: BML Province Day in Brussels
One hundred and fifty-five Jesuits and lay co-workers of the BML Province gathered in Brussels for their traditional yearly meeting. The chosen theme this year was the creation of the New Province, bringing together French speaking Belgium, Luxemburg, France and also Greece, Mauritius and La Réunion, in summer 2017. The aim was discovering collaborations, effective or to be built, in various domains of apostolic activities. For each domain, a Franco-Belgian paired partnership did the presentation of perspectives and opportunities but also of challenges in the actual and coming collaboration. The day was moderated by Fr.Tommy Scholtes. The BML Provincial Father Franck Janin presented first of all the historical background and the context of the rapprochement between the two Provinces. Afterwards Father John Dardis, the European Conference president, outlined a board of challenges to be met today by the Society in Europe and provided a few examples of rapprochements between provinces about everywhere in Europe.
