Fr. Thomas Michel entered the Jesuits to go to Indonesia where he found his specific vocation of studying Islam and entering into dialogue with Muslims. He headed the Secretariat for Interreligious Dialogue for the Jesuits and served as the Vatican's expert on Islam for many years. Besides his formal studies, he has traveled widely and lived in Turkey while teaching at universities there.
