Upon entering the archives, the visitor will deposit all coats, bags, purses, umbrellas, etc. in the lockers immediately inside the entrance. There are keys for the lockers.
Without exception, smoking, eating and drinking are prohibited in the archives. There is no telephone service.
Unbound documents are not to be separated from the fascicle or box holding them.
Tables of contents and indices are collected in a general index. Some of these are on the shelves in the reading room; others may be requested by completing the appropriate form.
Everyone may consult the books on the shelves of the reading room. The researcher should return the books to their proper place on the shelf after use. For other printed material not on the open shelves in the reading room, each reader should fill in one of the request forms.
To find a work, one consults the card catalog of printed material. If necessary, assistance may be asked of the archivists. The volumes with identification letters S.L. are those in the reading room. Archivists are available to meet researchers and to work with them in planning and developing their research. Names and hours available are posted on the bulletin board. Arrangements to meet during hours different from those posted can be made through the reading-room supervisor.
After having consulted the inventory and having obtained the precise call number, students may request documents by completing the appropriate request form and delivering it to the reading-room supervisor at the proper time.
Students may request three pieces at a time and may not use more than three at the same time. Students may not permit other researchers to use documents entrusted to them.
Each researcher is personally responsible for documents in his or her use. No one at the end of his or her work should leave the reading room without having returned all documents to the supervisor. Do not leave documents unattended on the desk or anywhere in the reading room. Upon returning the documents, each researcher should indicate to the supervisor whether they are being returned definitively or whether the researcher wishes them to be held for consultation again in the immediate future. Any attempt to remove documents or books from the reading room will result in the researcher's being banned from any future work in the archives.
In taking notes, students must not write on documents or books. Nor may any mark be made on the documents themselves.
Manuscripts must be handled with the greatest care. Whenever possible, volumes should be used on a book holder. Loose documents are to be kept in their proper order in the boxes or fascicles. If a student notices any error, he or she should draw it to the attention of the archivists. In case of damage or in case of discovery of damaged material, each student must alert the archivist immediately.
Students who have used documents from the archives for their theses or publications are expected to donate a copy of their work to the archives, which makes no other demand for use of materials contained therein.
The archives will not make any thesis available to the general public without prior authorization from the author.
