In 1598, Jesuit missions in Ireland, Scotland, and England were either suspended undermanned, or under attack. With the Elizabethan government’s collusion, secular clerics hostile to Robert Persons and his tactics campaigned in Rome for the Society’s removal from involvement in the English mission. This book continues Thomas M. McCoog’s series of studies on the history of the Society of Jesus during the Elizabethan and Jacobean periods; it draws on extensive archival materials to bring to life this fraught period in the history of the British Isles and the Society of Jesus. The volume is a co-publication with Brill’s Catholic Christendom Series.
